Three Pools July 25 2025

Leaving the crater we are again on the top of the ridges.

Where we drove round the base of the hills from the north our aim is follow a track southwards round the base of the hills.

We are hoping to follow a shortcut southwards rather than having to drive east to the rail line, south, then west again on Three Pools Road.

Below us is the junction, left to the north, the way we came in, and right to the south.

The road southwards looks good.

We follow our noses and turn through the hills. Freshly graded we are hopeful. A steep up, followed by a steep down.

  To meet a dead end.

The track is present on old maps, vague on satellite pics, and apparently non-existent as we try to follow wheel marks. A slow dawning that we have embarked on an exercise in futility.

So. The long way round. On good tracks.

The ever present Mt Newman in the distance.

  Slowly closer.

The creeks flow from the centre of the range. We cross many creeks. In the distance perhaps Kalgan Creek. The west to east creek we will eventually follow out of the range.

Definitely closer. We are enjoying being on the top of ridges.

To our north the broken east west line of bluffs that perhaps lead to the lack of use of the track we looked for.

  Definitely Kalgan Creek.

Our track seems too switch valleys through a gap.

Shortly after we reach the junction and turn northwards to Three Pools

  Totally inaccessible water.

Perhaps just as well as its cold.

A spontaneous decision to camp near the end of the track.

Advertised as tight to turn round in (we found lots of room). We camped a little back from the trees, in the sun.

From the end of the track looking back, to camp.

An evening stroll, wandering if anything will come for a drink.

But alas, no.

In the morning the sun illuminates the gorge.

This is one pool. We are unsure where the other two are.

We will probably never know, this gorge is impassable to us, the water inaccessible even if we decided to swim.

Perhaps up and above the left cliff .......... maybe next time!
