Warrumbungle National Park September 8-9

Too much driving, we decide to pause in the Warrumbungle National Park.

We turn off the Newell at Tooraweenah. Head north along the western side of the park.

Then into the park, to Gunneemooroo. The code is .....!

  A pleasant drive.

The volcanic origin of the Warrumbungle obvious.

An awkard, very substantial, gate. Just enough room to enter the combination in the lock and extract it.

An afternoon walk. Along the Burbie Fire Trail.

If we followed it north for about 10km we would reach the main road through the park, tomorrow night's camp, and other walks.

But we didn't. Ali stopped early, I continued upward for 3km.

The wildlife is friendly. Not so much the goats.

  Its Spring.

  An acrobatic yellow plumed honeyeater.

Nice to be in the middle of mountains.

A few drops of rain, the weather has cleared enough to be nice.

  A pleasant campsite.

The threatened rain soon dried, no impediment to leaving.

Next day the 50km drive into the middle of the park.

More walking, we start at the north end of the Burbie Fire Trail.

  Several shades of yellow.

This is (we think) Accacia. We've seen lots in the last couple of days.

  A lighter shade of ...

We turn off the fire trail, follow the steep track around Split Rock.

Its steep.

  Myrtle.

As we climb higher we see more of the park.

The tall thin bit on the left is, we think, the pillar that overlooked last night's camp.

Looking east. Below us is recovered farmland, and the park information centre (which was closed - we were too early).

  More flowers.

The core of Split Rock is volcanic.

  A buff rumped thornbill.

It may be Australia's smallest bird. At least close to ...

  Wambelong Camping Area.

There are 6 caravans as I type. And one car/tent.

Cloudy, not enough sun to feed the solar. We added some charge from alternator in the 50km drive.

The first day in the last three months we have to think about solar.
