Eastwards, with the detour along the fence.
The landscape now really flat. Just undulates a bit. Vegetation shorter and more sparse. The ground hard and stony. |
Civilisation? The sails are turning. But not connected to anything. |
Even the trees and bushes disappear.
We pause near Mabel Creek Station to inflate the tyres a
bit. Corrugations between the park and here haven't bothered us. Speeds up
to 50 km/hr, fast after our usual 18-30km/hr since Emu. Mabel Creek flows south (when it rains) to the ephemoral salt lake Phillipson. |
Our expectation fulfilled. Smooth gravel road, all the way to Coober Pedy.
The Ghan is paused at Manguri siding. Presumably waiting
for a train headed north to pass. I count 29 carriages. A looong train. A bit of a dip in the rails methinks ... unsuitable for high speed trains. Or different carriages in the middle? |
Maybe just the siding. Good track, on concrete sleepers. |
80km/hr all the way to Coober Pedy. I'll never tire of the coloured sands excavated in the hunt for opals. |
We hunt for water. No price, almost impossible to read the display, set $20 limit on credit, and hope. The machine said it would only take for what we used. It took $20 but didn't stop. No phone numbers.
After water and dump point, fuel, hardware, and food.
Then east, towards William Creek. We crossed into the Lake Eyre Basin at Coober Pedy. |
A wide, seriously good, gravel road. The road passes through Anna Creek Station, and past the homestead. Australia's largest station. |
We divert northwards about 6km to Lake Cadibarrawirracanna. The name means "stars dancing on water". |
A salt lake in a slight depression.
An evening walk, some surprise flowers. There's a big sign at the end of the road. We walk along remnants of the track that used to go further. |
The middle of this plant is filled with sand. Presumably wind blown, then set by rain.
The water is salty, and shallow. A kangaroo has crossed. We saw one small bird on the far side, it flew before the camera moved. Emu tracks. But not a lot else ... we need more practice. |
A few clouds to set the sky on fire from the setting sun. We decide to have another rest day. |
Surprised by three woodswallows visiting the nearest tree and gathering insects.
Accompanied by a small flock of zebra finches. I guess Anna Creek Station has fresh water. The Lake Cada bore is about 10km north of us, behind fences. There's a spring marked on maps on the other side of the water. |
The wind has changed. The tide has gone out. It later went
even further. I spent a couple of hours bending and aligning the driver's side rear view mirror. The brackets a bit bent, and fittings loose, after the pounding of trees too close to the tracks to avoid. I had removed mirrors on both sides. Fitted driver's side at Mabel Creek. Despite my best efforts it was loose and survived just long enough to get us through Coober Pedy. The near side mirror no better. I bent, fitted, and adjusted. Time for lunch. Cleaned both with windex. Now they are sparkling, I hope they hold their adjustment. |
Down a lot. It must have flowed back into the lake proper
from our channel. We could walk across to the spring .... but decide not to. |
We walked south. | |
