Paruchilna Gorge and Waukaringa August 25 - 26

  Dawn broke. Again.

A leaving present from Muloorina.

We carry on south on the Oodnadatta Track.

The small towns become a little larger.

Our plan had been to follow the Strzlecki Track north east, through Innaminka, to Queensland.

Alas, the Cooper Creek is still overflowing into Strzlecki Creek, which makes the track impassable between Moomba and Innaminka.

The alternative, through Merty Merty to Cameron Corner is open. However, we are aware the front drive shaft universal joints are "tired" so are not enthusiastic about the roller coaster of dunes west of Cameron Corner.

We decide to drive further south then through the middle of the Flinders, then Broken Hill and Tibooburra.

  A nicely sealed road.

  Past Copley.

The Flinders appear to our east.

  At Paruchilna we turn east.

We've just passed the site of Ediacara Fossils. They gave their name to a geological epoch.

Closed until recently, there are now tours offered.

Highly priced, guided, for something we don't want. We just want to see the fossils.

  Into Paruchilna Gorge.

We've camped in the gorge previously.

A short walk to stretch our legs.

  A pleasant sunrise.

We are passing the northern end of the Heysen Trail. We walk a couple of km through the valley.

  Occasional flowers.

  Light between the clouds.

Anywhere else we would ponder the nature of the rock.

These are raindrops.

  Typical Flinders ...

  Past Blinman.

We are unsure if the road to Arkaroola is open or closed. Sort of half way.

It would have been an alternative route to here.

The geology lesson that is the Flinders provided a few outcrops.

Through the Flinders we look back.

  And forward, through sheep country.

  We've camped at Waukaring previously.

This time we don't venture to the mine, we stay next to the ruins of the hotel.

Alas. We have discovered a broken spring. Front left, main leaf. Still drivable, the next two leaves are long enough. Add lots of grease so they can slide against the remains of the main leaf in the stirrup.
