Lake Auld July 9 - 10 2025

This is the shortcut to Kunawarritji.

Alas, we have at least another km of corrugations to the junction of the stock route with the Gary Junction Road (Kiwirrkurra Road).

Then we can turn west.

  The corrugations are viscious.

Fuel and water at Kunawarritji. And some shopping - the shop a bit low on fresh fruit and veg, due for delivery in a couple of days.

The road west has been recently graded. It was closed for a while after heavy rain.

Along the wide swale between two long dunes.

  Until broken by Lake Auld.

Another in the string of Percival Lakes.

We inflated tyres just after Kunawarritji when we learned how good the road is.

Our campsite is on the north side of the road, we look north to a small, disconnected, part of Lake Auld.

We camped here in April 2018. Part of a long trip through the Pilbara and Kimberley. The year we broke a spring on Sandy Blight Junction. Our journey through here was at a leisurely 10-12 km/hr. Not helped by corrugations.

Our plan then was to visit Karlamilyi National Park but thwarted by the broken spring we took the shortest easiest route to Newman for new spring.

A lot of maintenance on the truck prior to this trip means reliability has so far been good.

Climb the dune on the south side of the road as the sun lowers and look south. We can only see a small part of the 50km long lake.

And back to camp to watch the sun set on our little lake.

Early enough to relax and do some laundry.

Tomorrow a day of rest, more laundry, and shower.

There is a brisk cooling breeze for drying.

Punmu store tells us they have a water tap and a hose outside the store.

  Yup. Lots of laundry.

For those who notice, the camera is slowly failing. The edge of something round appears in bottom left at near zoom. Zooming a bit gets rid of it. But not enough zoom the left edge is out of focus. As in this pic.

Also gone walkabout seems to be image stabilisation. Apparent at long zooms.

We like the model (Panasonic Lumix FZ80) but its been out of production for more than a couple of years. A quick check and the FZ80D was released late last year. We'll consider buying when we return home. Alternative is a Nikon P950. Both are long zoom bridge cameras. The Nikon longer. Neither have built in gps, but can access phone gps ..... what a pain!

A walk east along the edge of the little lake.

The crust is soft.

And up to the top of the stony dune that forms the lake edge when it was really really really full.
